Authors
The correspondents, companions and occasional conspirators who gather inside the Night Road Room, each bringing their own obsessions, histories, broken maps and strange weather.
Finlay Cowan
Finlay Cowan has lived many lives, none of them entirely planned.
He has written and illustrated books, worked inside Pink Floyd’s visual world, designed for film, games and publishing, founded cafés, revived old rooms, built places for other people’s dreams, and spent years moving through Italy, China and the territories between reinvention and collapse.
In Italy, he raised a family in a decaying farmhouse while writing five best-selling books on fantasy art. In China, he moved through the acrid haze of Shanghai and Hangzhou, immersed in an entirely different mythology of speed, estrangement and transformation.
At eighteen, he played bass for Johnny Thunders of the New York Dolls, narrowly avoided joining Jeffrey Lee Pierce’s Gun Club, and came close enough to rock-and-roll mythology to understand that survival is sometimes the more interesting story.
Later, he entered the orbit of Storm Thorgerson, the architect of Pink Floyd’s visual language. Their work together included Back Catalogue, the surreal projections for The Division Bell world tour, a Grammy nomination, and imagery that would later find its way into the V&A.
His path continued through film, graphic novels, publishing, architecture, cafés, nurseries, family clubs, East London, Italy, Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai and Hangzhou — a long sequence of rooms, roads, failed ventures, strange friendships, late-night conversations, country houses, unfinished maps and improbable returns.
Across all of it runs a fascination with mythology, transformation and the strange way stories shape us, whether we invite them in or not.
Somewhere along the way he became a kind of pale rider between country houses, helping other people bring their visions into form, while silently gathering his own.

The Accidental Exile is where those gathered papers now live. It is the home for the books, essays, special editions, audiobooks, soundtrack recordings, prints and artworks of Finlay Cowan & Co: a record of strange cities, black cats, late-night cafés, languid women, memory, myth, melancholy and the search for meaning when the map has failed.
This is what survives the collapse of certainty; this is what remains when illusions have burned away.
